If you have suffered an injury as the result of a violent crime or a criminal activity you may be entitled to claim compensation from the Criminal Injury Compensation Authority (CICA).

There are strict requirements which have to be met when you claim under the Criminal Injury Compensation Scheme. To receive criminal injury compensation you must have:-

• suffered an injury (either physical or psychological) as a result of a crime
• received an injury serious enough to require medical treatment at a hospital, or at least 2 appointments with your GP

• reported the matter promptly to the police and cooperated with their investigation.

In most cases your claim must be brought within 2 years of your injury, although exceptions can be made in some circumstances.

The CICA may turn down your claim if you have criminal convictions for violent offences or if they feel your behaviour led or contributed to the incident.
